Cardinal bean
This funky spiky flower is blooming everywhere at Edisto. I've never seen it before. My uncle the master gardener (who has been down here and has cooked crab for us) says that in the summer it grows really long bean pods.
I have that in my backyard (at least I think it's the same thing)! I bought it at the farmer's market downtown a year or so ago. I think they called it a Fire Plant... obviously not the official name. Mine got really big last year and then when the first freeze came got killed above ground.
Hmmm... looked and read again. I don't have the bean pods, so maybe not the same. But it sure looks like that, even the leaves. Oh well... the flower's a pretty color!
